Ice Fishing

Go to one of the many beautiful lakes around Syracuse and Central New York and learn how to Ice Fish. One lake in particular is Oneida lake and one of the best spots is off of Constantia on the north shore. You will need to have a snowmobile or a ATV to reach the place where you can ice fish. Ask at the local Gander Mountain or other fishing sport shops for the name of any local groups that you can be come affiliated with. Being a part of an ice fishing group will give you that needed experience that comes with being a long time ice fishers.

Ice Skating

Go to a local ice skating rink and take up Ice Skating. Check out the Clinton Square Ice Rink in Downtown Syracuse. It's a great gathering spot for locals and tourists alike. The Utica Memorial Auditorium in Utica, NY, while used for many different functions; is turned into an ice rink in the winter. There is also ice skating open to the public at New Hartford Town Recreation Center in New Hartford, NY. Ice skating is a fun way to enjoy the winters in Central New York, especially when you enjoy it with friends. These ice skating rinks usually include music in the rink which makes it even more fun.

Skiing

Rent some down hill skis or buy them and enjoy down hill skiing. There are many places to down hill ski in Central New York. Some ski resort locations include Snow Ridge in Turin, NY, Song Mountain in Tully, NY and Woods Valley in Westernville, NY among many others. Many people enjoy this sport during the winter in Central NY. These resorts offer both individual day passes and season passes.

Try snowboarding as an alternative to down hill skiing or in addition to. Snowboarding has become a favorite in Central New York. It may possibly be the chosen among the two. Snowboarding is allowed at most downhill skiing resorts. It does take time to learn to balance but you will have fun in the process.

Cross Country Skiing

Enjoy the beautiful scenery in Central New York by cross country skiing. Some people choose to cross country ski instead of down hill because of the exercise and the beauty that they will see as they slide through the many trails of some of the most beautiful landscaped mountains. There are over 43,000 ski trails in NY.

Take the kids and enjoy the day sledding on the hill. Sledding is an easy sport to partake in because all you need to do is climb the hill, hop on and slide down. It does wear you out by the end of the day since you will be walking up the hill quite a few times. So you do get your exercise.

Snowmobiling

Invest in a snowmobile and join the thousands of people in Central New York that own snowmobiles and enjoy snowmobiling all winter long. They also come in handy when a bad snowstorm closes streets down.

Jump in the snow and play with the kids. Make snow angles, snowman, snow fort, or just have an all out snow ball fight. What ever you choose to do have fun and stay warm and dry.
